The ever popular Helensburgh Bowling Club, Gents Open Pairs competition, was held at the club during the week commencing 26th June 2017 and is run on a knockout basis, this year it attracted a large entry from within and out with the Helensburgh area. The competition this year, for the J. C. Ross Trophy first played for in 1957, was again very kindly sponsored by the well known local company Helensburgh Toyota/ Subaru. The early rounds were played on Monday, and Tuesday all over 12 ends from which Joe Carr and Lenny Prow Dumbuck BC, father and son Charles & Jim Cavana Cardross BC, father and son Ciaran & Mark Smith Garelochhead BC along with Craig Thomson and Andy McFarlane Argyle /Eastfield BC’s qualified for the semi finals.
Due to the bad weather experienced during the week the semi - finals were played on the early session on Thursday in the first of which Charles and Jim Cavana faced previous winners Joe Carr and Lenny Prow, who started the best in the game going into and 6 shots to 2 after three ends before Charles and Jim staged a comeback to reduce the deficit to 6 shots to 5 scoring a three at the sixth end. Joe and Lenny then regained the initiative and to lead by 9 shots to 7 and closed the game out scoring 6 shots in the last to ends to win by 15 shots to 7
The second Semi Final brought together the Garelochhead pairing of Ciaran and Mark Smith who faced Craig Thomson and Andy McFarlane Argyle/ Eastfield BC’s. The early stages of this game were tight although the Smiths were always in front right up to the ninth end when they led by 8 shots to 4. The tenth end changed everything when the Thomson/ McFarlane pair scored four shots to level the game at 8 shots all and went into the lead at the second last end by 1 shot. The Smith Pair were not beaten yet as they levelled the game in the last end scoring one shot. An extra end was needed to decide who went into the final and the victors scoring two shots to  win 11 shots to 9 were the Thomson/ McFarlane pairing from Argyle & Eastfield BC’s
Runners Up on GreenThe final played, also played on Thursday over 12 ends saw Joe Carr and Lenny Prow Dumbuck BC face Craig Thomson Winners With Gary weband Andy McFarlane Argyle /Eastfield BC’s.  The game was very close at the start with both pairs level on 4 shots after 6 ends. Joe and Lenny then broke the deadlock scoring a massive 4 shots at the seventh end to lead by 8 shots to 4. Craig and Andy kept to the task however both teams added 4 & 3 shots respectively in the remaining ends of the game which resulted in Joe Carr and Lenny Prow again securing the Trophy by 12 shots to 7
After the game President Patricia McCallan welcomed Gary Mulvenna from Helensburgh Toyota/ Subaru.  Gary then presented the prizes to the Losing Semi finalists, the Runners up, and finally the Trophy and Prizes to the winners Joe Carr and Lenny Prow from Dumbuck BC who thanked all the players for participating, Allan Howie for his organisation and in particular Helensburgh Toyota/Subaru for their generous sponsorship of the event. Gary in closing said he had enjoyed watching some of the game the game, he appreciated the effort of all the players and Helensburgh Toyota/Subaru were pleased to be involved with the club in the competition.
